Vita

Claudia Peppel is in charge of Academic Coordination and Communication at the ICI Berlin. She guides the implementation of public conferences, lectures, and other events by ICI Fellows and invited guests.

Before joining the ICI Berlin, she held positions at the Berlin University of the Arts, the TU Darmstadt, and in a film company. Her research focuses on literary and cultural studies, as well as aesthetics, art history, and visual studies. She studied Italian and French languages and literatures, as well as psychology at the Freie Universität Berlin and the Sapienza Università di Roma. She was a fellow of the German National Endowment (DFG) and part of the research programme ‘Technology and Society’ at the TU Darmstadt and affiliated with the DFG programme ‘Zeiterfahrung und ästhetische Wahrnehmung’ at the Goethe University Frankfurt. She has taught at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin.

Claudia Peppel’s monograph Der Manichino. Von der Gliederpuppe zum technisierten Kultobjekt explores the Metaphysical Art of Giorgio de Chirico and his contemporaries. In the early 20th century, as mechanisation, mass culture, and mass production lead in a variety of ways to a heightened awareness of and engagement with abstraction and alienation both in society at large and in the arts, the manichino (or mannequin) was one of the most unusual responses in the visual arts. Its position as a modern object vacillates between art, fashion, and the emerging commodity fetishism.

She has co-organized various events at the ICI Berlin, for example, The Future of the Studio (with Cristina Baldacci), From Solar Futures to Future Solidarity (with Sara Castelo Branco), But I Digress and Waiting (with Corinna Haas and Arnd Wedemeyer), and Counter-Archive (with Gal Kirn).

Claudia Peppel curated several exhibitions at the ICI Berlin, including The Waiting Room (with Cristina Baldacci, Francesco Giusti and Clio Nicastro), Untimely NowUnfinished, Clair obscur, and Along the Lines, as well as Je suis parti faire un tour at KunstRaum Ko in Berlin, Mon monde est l’ambiguïté at the Musée de l’Échevinage and L’après-midi de ma vie at L’Abbaye aux Dames
in Saintes, France. In 2019, Peppel co-edited the volume Die Kunst des Wartens (with Brigitte Kölle).

In addition, she is interested in food cultures and sustainable food practices.
