‘Keep it together’, someone is saying, while you pull gently at a loose thread with your mind elsewhere. The weave begins to fray and the fraying pulls you into the beginning of another sentence that has already moved on from where you started pulling, towards an ending that will be no less irreversible than the beginning it now reverses.

Threads don’t always hold. Things unravel. And we, too, fray under strain or with intention. Can one follow the thread? Can one seek clarity or a way out amidst the tangle? Rough around the edges, one can loosen up just as one might fall apart. There may be an art to this, like the art of letting go, but would its gestures be deliberate or casual, gradual or sudden, constrained or free? And what remains once the pattern has been undone?

The ICI Library Event explores these questions through a staged reading and a knitting performance, delving into the manifold ways in which unravelling plays out.
