Die europäische Welt ist in ständigem Wandel begriffen, ohne dass klar wird, in welche Richtung sie sich bewegt. Auch sprachlich. Werden wir in fünfhundert Jahren nur auf Englisch kommunizieren? Oder lässt sich im zukünftigen Europa ein Sprachraum vorstellen, in dem sich Bürgerinnen und Bürger mühelos mehrsprachig bewegen. Wird es uns gelingen, eine Gemeinschaft zu schaffen, in der sprachliche Vielfalt kein Hindernis darstellt – oder steuern wir auf eine Vorherrschaft des globalen Englisch zu, die notwendigerweise die Bindung an unsere Muttersprachen schwächt? Die drei bekannten Sprachdenker, Barbara Cassin, Tullio De Mauro und Jürgen Trabant, werden diese Fragen diskutieren.
Als passionierte europäische Intellektuelle haben sie sich wiederholt dem ehrgeizigen Unterfangen gewidmet, sich die Zukunft Europas vorzustellen. Sie haben auch vor den Gefahren einer sprachlichen Homogenisierung für Politik, Kultur und Gesellschaft gewarnt. Diesen Gefahren setzen sie originelle Perspektiven entgegen, welche in den geschichtlichen Traditionen ihrer Länder verwurzelt sind, und leiten daraus neue Interpretationen grundlegender Aspekte ab.

L’Europe évolue sans arrêt mais on ne connaît pas encore le but précis de son évolution, aussi du point de vue linguistique. Dans cinq cents ans, parlera-t-on seulement en anglais ? Ou bien peut-on imaginer un univers plurilinguistique, où les Européens pourront s’exprimer à leur aise ? Arrivera-t-on à créer une communauté solide de citoyens où la multiplicité linguistique n’empêchera pas de se parler et de se comprendre de façon non superficielle et de trouver de nouvelles façons d’être ensemble ? Ou bien s’approche-t-on tous, de façon inévitable, d’une suprématie de l’anglais global qui affaiblira nécessairement notre rapport avec nos langues maternelles ? Trois importants spécialistes des disciplines philosophique et linguistique, Barbara Cassin, Tullio De Mauro et Jürgen Trabant, essaieront de répondre à ces questions. Ce sont trois intellectuels européens passionnés, qui se sont souvent essayés à l’entreprise ambitieuse d’imaginer le futur de l’Europe, en mettant en garde contre les risques politiques, économiques et culturels d’une éventuelle homogénéisation linguistique. Les perspectives originales qu’ils ont proposées trouvent leurs racines dans les traditions historiques de leurs pays respectifs, tout en en réinterprétant des aspects fondamentaux.

L’Europa è in continua evoluzione ma ancora non è chiaro in quali direzioni si sta muovendo. Anche dal punto di vista linguistico. Tra cinquecento anni si parlerà solo in inglese? Oppure è immaginabile un universo plurilinguistico in cui le persone che vivranno in Europa possano muoversi a loro agio? Riusciremo a creare una comunità solida di cittadini in cui la molteplicità non sarà di ostacolo alla capacità di parlarsi e comprendersi in maniera non superficiale, trovando nuove modalità di esperienza comuni? Oppure ci avviamo tutti inesorabilmente verso una supremazia dell’inglese globale che ci obbligherà a rendere meno forte e significativo il rapporto con le nostre lingue materne? A queste e ad altre domande cercheranno di rispondere tre grandi studiosi di discipline filosofico-linguistiche: Barbara Cassin, Tullio De Mauro e Jürgen Trabant, appassionati intellettuali europei che si sono spesso cimentati nell’impresa ambiziosa di immaginare il futuro dell’Europa, lanciando allarmi riguardo a rischi di natura politica, economica e culturale connessi all’omogeneizzazione linguistica, abbracciando prospettive originali che affondano le radici nelle tradizioni storiche dei loro Paesi e ne reinterpretano aspetti fondamentali.
