26. Karl-Abraham-Vorlesung
Riccardo Steiner skizziert in seinem Vortrag, auf welche Weise einige Pioniere der Britischen Psychoanalyse versuchten, gesellschaftspolitische und zeitgeschichtliche Probleme der ersten Jahrzehnte des 20. Jahrhunderts mit Hilfe der Psychoanalyse zu verstehen. Neben Freud und Ferenczi nimmt er vornehmlich Arbeiten von Ernest Jones, Edward Glovers berühmtes Buch War, Sadism and Pacifism (1933, 1947) sowie Psychoanalysis and Politics (1951) von Roger Money-Kyrle in den Blick. Die Kontroverse zwischen Otto Fenichel und Edward Glover wird ebenso thematisiert wie der häufig vernachlässigte Einfluss Karl Abrahams und seiner Schülerin Melanie Kleins auf ihre Britischen Kollegen. Riccardo Steiner wird zeigen, wie relevant diese Debatten und Wechselwirkungen heute noch sind, und für eine behutsame und realitätsbezogene Verwendung von Psychoanalyse plädieren.
Riccardo Steiner (London) arbeitet als Psychoanalytiker in freier Praxis und hat an verschiedenen Universitäten innerhalb und außerhalb Großbritanniens gelehrt. Er ist ein ausgewiesener Kenner auf dem Gebiet der Geschichte der Psychoanalyse. Das von ihm (zusammen mit Pearl King) herausgegebene Buch Die Freud/Klein-Kontroversen 1941-1945 wurde international mehrfach prämiert. In zahlreichen Publikationen hat er sich mit Fragen der klinischen Theorie und der Übersetzung Freuds ins Englische befasst. Für seine Beiträge zur Psychoanalyse wurde er 2001 mit dem Sigourney Award ausgezeichnet. Er ist Mitglied der Britischen Psychoanalytischen Gesellschaft und Lehr- und Kontrollanalytiker der Britischen Psychoanalytischen Vereinigung.

Zu diesem Anlass werden international renommierte Psychoanalytiker und Wissenschaftler eingeladen.

26th Karl Abraham Lecture
In his lecture, Riccardo Steiner will sketch how some of the pioneers of British psychoanalysis tried to apply psychoanalysis to understand sociopolitical and historical issues during the first decades of the last century. Apart from Freud’s and Ferenczi’s work, he will focus on some papers of Ernest Jones, Edward Glover’s famous book War, Sadism and Pacifism (1932, 1947) and Roger Money-Kyrle’s Psychoanalysis and Politics (1951). The debate between Otto Fenichel and Edward Glover will also be mentioned, and the often ignored influence of Karl Abraham and his pupil Melanie Klein on their British colleagues will be demonstrated, as well. Finally, Riccardo Steiner will discuss the relevance of those interactions and debates up to this day and argue for a cautious and reality-based psychoanalytic input.
Riccardo Steiner (London) works as a psychoanalyst in private practice and has taught at several universities in Great Britain and elsewhere. He is a proven expert on the history of psychoanalysis. His edition (together with Pearl King) of The Freud-Klein Controversies 1941-45 has been awarded several international prizes. He has written papers and books on clinical theory and on the translation of Freud’s work into English. In 2001 he was honoured with the Sigourney Award for his contributions to psychoanalysis. He is a full member of the British Psychoanalytic Society and a training analyst of the British Psychoanalytic Association.

The Berlin Psychoanalytic Institute (Karl Abraham Institute) represents classical psychoanalysis and is a member of the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA). One emphasis of its activities is the exchange with international professional societies and their members. The Karl Abraham Lecture takes place every year in May to commemorate the birthday of Karl Abraham, after whom the institute has been named. Internationally renowned psychoanalysts and scholars are invited to give the lecture.
