Die Tagung macht sich zur Aufgabe, den Vorgang des Auf- und Abtretens als den darstellungstechnischen Grundgestus des europäischen Theaters zu beschreiben. Den Vers aus Shakespeare’s As you like it, “They have their exits and their entrances” nimmt sie deshalb als strenge formale Anweisung. Ihr Ziel ist es, die konsistente symbolische Operation, die Shakespeare zur Sprache bringt, in ihren technischen wie in ihren kulturtheoretischen Aspekten zu erkunden. Auftritte stellen demzufolge nicht nur eine theatermechanische Notwendigkeit dar, sie geben in grundsätzlicher Weise Formen vor, die das Hervortreten, Sichtbarwerden und öffentliche Sprechen dramatischer und anderer Figuren regeln. Zugleich lässt sich der Auftritt als elementares kulturelles Ordnungsmuster beschreiben, das Kommen und Gehen, Anwesenheit und Abwesenheit, Inklusion und Exklusion nicht nur auf der Bühne, sondern auch in der Gesellschaft organisiert.

Modes of Movement in Drama and Theater
The conference sets out to describe and examine the processes of entering and exiting as the basic representational operations in European theater. Therefore, it takes Shakespeare’s verse from As you like it, “They have their exits and their entrances,” as a rigorous formal directive. It is our goal to explore the technical as well cultural dimensions of the symbolic operation which Shakespeare takes to be defining the theatricality of life and world. Entrances are not only a factum brutum of theatrical practice but constitute the modes in which the emergence, visualization, and public speaking of figures, dramatic and otherwise, are organized. Simultaneously, entrances and exits can be understood as elementary cultural protocols which regulate coming and going, presence and absence, inclusion and exclusion not only on stage, but in manifold social contexts.
