Translation, Mediation, brPower

Translation, Mediation,
Power

Symposium, 12 Jun 2023; 15:00 - 21:00

Translation can be understood in different ways: as a practice, a concept, a technique, a method, a site of contestation. This symposium is especially interested in the unsettling potential of translation as a form of mediation that can either re-enact or challenge structures of power. In this way, translation can afford hermeneutic complexity, which complicates the dynamics of the particular and the universal, the local and the global, that dominate debates on coloniality, imperialism, and neo-liberalism.

With Dilek Dizdar, Iracema Dulley, Özgün Eylül İşcen, Jamille Pinheiro Dias, Evren Savci, Niloufar Tajeri, and Ayşe Yuva

Animal Fantasies between Art and Madness

Symposium, 14-15 Jun 2023, 14:00 - 21:00

From the late 1960s onwards, Brazilian artist Lygia Clark (1920–1988) developed a series of unstable and manipulable sculptures that she named bichos — ‘beast’, ‘animal’, or ‘critter’. These unconventional objects constituted a turning point in Clark’s artistic trajectory as she progressively moved away from the Neo-Concrete Movement, shifting her focus towards the frontier between artistic and clinical practice.

Organized by Delfina Cabrera, Marlon Miguel, Elena Vogman

An ICI Berlin Event in cooperation with the research project ‘Madness, Media, Milieus. Reconfiguring the Humanities in Postwar Europe’ (Volkswagen Stiftung/Bauhaus-Universität Weimar)

Stella do Patrocínio´s Chatter

Staged Reading & Artist Talk, 15 Jun 2023, 19:00

Stella do Patrocínio (1941-1992) was hospitalized in 1962 in the psychiatric hospital Colônia Juliano Moreira in Rio de Janeiro at the age of 21. In the asylum, where she remained until her death, she developed her unclassifiable falatório, a performative, poetic, violent, critical, and prophetic chatter, centering around bichos as one of the main and disruptive figures.

With Yvonne Sembene (performer) and Carla Guagliardi (artist)

Rendering Intelligence: Biomedical Datasets and the Impossible Image

Online Lecture, 19 Jun 2023, 19:30

The impossible image describes the botanical illustrations crucial to building the British Empire, and the ways botanical drawings emerged as a moral model. Wang will draw the connections between the impossible image of botanical illustrations and the traces of the impossible image in current understandings of generative AI.

From Material to Symbol, to Model: The Bridge

Lecture, 3 Jul 2023, 19:30

This lecture will present the bridge as a structure of interconnectivity by which one passes from one form or familiarity to another. The bridge is a model of communication. By locking two into the space of one, it enables thought and the experience of the social. Interdisciplinarity and transculturality also depend on bridges, approachable with lesser or greater degrees of enthusiasm.
