Voice-as-Skin

Book Presentation & Discussion, 16 Jul 2025, 19:00

Based on Zeynep Bulut’s book, Building a Voice: Sound, Surface, Skin (Goldsmiths Press, 2025), this presentation and discussion will explore how one can imagine voice as skin and what such an imagination offers in times of crisis and uncertainties. Drawing on the notions and practices of embodied voice in experimental music and participatory media art, the event will revisit individual, collective, and multi-sensory processes of voice-making in everyday life. In so doing, it will consider the conception of a voice, one that is both individual and anonymous, and one that functions like a skin, a multi-sensory interface and surface that both connects and differentiates bodies of all kinds without being limited to discursive labels of language.

With Zeynep Bulut, Brandon LaBelle, and Holger Schulze.

Livestream available.
Registration required.

Time and the Everyday
in Slow Cinema

Rosa Barotsi

Cultural Inquiry, 34
Berlin: ICI Berlin Press, 2025
Scheduled for 8 July 2025

This book examines the European component of Slow cinema, a strand of contemporary cinema that makes extensive use of distended durations and the ‘dead time’ of quotidian activities. I trace the development of the two notions that form its core — time and the everyday — in order to situate it both in film history and contemporary culture. My aim is to interpret the momentum that this particular approach to filmmaking has gained in recent decades, by examining it in relation to developments in philosophical thought, film theory, technology, the film industry, and the specificity of the contemporary socio-political situation of late capitalism.

Breaking and
Making Models

ed. by Christoph F. E. Holzhey, Marietta Kesting, Claudia Peppel

Cultural Inquiry, 33
Berlin: ICI Berlin Press, 2025

Open Access

Practically anything can be a model of or for something else. What characterizes models is rather their specific reductive relationality, which often promotes understanding but is always generative rather than merely representational. The essays in Breaking and Making Models engage with the normative and performative qualities of models, their aesthetic and political dimensions, and their world-making potentials. Bringing such perspectives into a broad interdisciplinary dialogue, this book explores ways to work creatively with models.
