What Can Be Done brabout Semantic Perversion?

What Can Be Done
about Semantic Perversion?

With Robert Harvey and Sverre Raffnsøe

Book Presentation & Discussion, 27 Mar 2025, 19:00

Today’s communication produces an incredible amount of what could be described as ‘semantic perversion’. Moreover, it seems that the critical faculties of too many people have been dulled, dried up, and withered. These conditions make people particularly susceptible to demagoguery, to enslavement by perverse power. The discussion, based on the book The Rhetoric of Manipulation by Robert Harvey, centres on a frank exposure of vicious discursive practices and the gullibility that accompanies them.

Scale Critique and the Subject of Technoscience
Lecture, 12 May 2025, 19:30

This talk addresses the relationship between subject formation in contemporary technoscience and the theoretical problems of scale at work in ICI’s lecture series. Drawing on the ontology and media theory of Gilbert Simondon, Woods understands scientific subjectification in terms of a tension between at least two qualitatively different scales such as weather and climate. His central example is computational climate modelling — especially the use of grids, time steps, and parameters to establish a model’s resolution.

Mobilizing Affect – brAffective Mobilization

Mobilizing Affect –
Affective Mobilization

Conference, 21–23 May 2025

The conference explores the powerful role of affect and emotion in driving social and political mobilization. It examines the dynamics of affect in prompting (political) action, shaping activist practices, and sustaining social movements. In the context of global crises, disputes over inequalities, identities, and rights are intensifying, while affects and emotions are increasingly becoming subjects of negotiation and social conflict.

The conference is organized by the Collaborative Research Center 1171 ‘Affective Societies’, FU Berlin, in cooperation with the TU Dresden research project ‘Image Protests on Social Media’ and ICI Berlin.

Registration opens on 6 May 2025

Unworlding: Trans Anarchitectures
Lecture, 26 May 2025, 19:00

In this talk, Halberstam will explore the meaning of trans embodiment using a vocabulary borrowed from a 1970’s art collective called ‘anarchitecture’. The work of Gordon Matta-Clark represents the spirit and the intentions of this group. Halberstam believes one should use the language of anarchitecture to describe trans embodiment for a few reasons: First, trans bodies should not become legible within the system of gender that was constructed around its exclusion. In other words, if trans bodies violate binary gender, then they cannot seek to become ‘real’ through that same binary.
