When Home is a Photograph: Kathleen Cleaver's Albums of Exile

Lecture, 26 Feb 2024, 19:30

This talk examines how former Black Panther Party Communications Secretary Kathleen Neal Cleaver has used photography to make ’home‘ in the world. Raiford considers the everyday image making practices that a public figure committed to improving the conditions of Black lives globally has engaged to imagine, identify, create, fabulate, inhabit, leave and, sometimes, destroy ‘home‘.

Thinking the Present with Jean-Luc Nancy

Conference, 29 Feb – 1 Mar 2024, 9:30 – 21:00

The present time is one of general disruption, in which crisis is the normal state of affairs. In a situation characterized by climate catastrophe, pandemic, war, interruptions to supply chains, and contestations of democracy, the modern Western categories of ‘progress’ and ‘History’ implode. With Jean-Luc Nancy’s work as the point of departure, the hope of this conference is to re-think the present and the present status of world.

Shifting brNatures

Shifting
Natures

Symposium, 14 – 15 Mar 2024

The very concept of nature has been the subject of thorough critique for quite a while. From a Western deconstructive perspective, nature is a signifier standing for naive immediacy or reactionary normativity. Poststructuralist and queer paradigms have shifted from an idea of nature as a being and of the natural as a given to a conception of them as the effects of discursive, performative practices.

Organized by Federica Buongiorno, Alberica Bazzoni, and Xenia Chiaramonte

At the venue: Registration will open on 29 Feb 2024

Model
Organisms

Materiality, History and Politics

Symposium, 21 – 22 Mar 2024

Model organisms are life forms used to test biological theories of various kinds in laboratory settings. Research with model organisms muddies the line between models as material objects and models as abstract entities. Model organisms are not fully constructed, since they are evolved beings, but the longer they reside in a laboratory the less they resemble their kin in the wild.

Keynotes by Sabina Leonelli (with Rachel Ankeny) and Jan Baedke

Organized by Maria Dębińska, Julia Sánchez-Dorado, Ben Woodard

At the venue: Registration will open on 6 March 2024

Drag!
Queer Crossings in Global Contexts

Symposium, 13 May 2024

In the wake of the drag boom, questions of what drag performance is and does are increasingly relevant. Such questions might lead to diverse understandings of drag, including as a queer and/or trans way of doing things, a method of critique, a form of activism, and an art form with a rich legacy of deconstructing and challenging dominant norms and systems of oppression. Focusing on multi-layered contexts of queer crossings, this symposium aims to develop critical approaches to drag that incorporate its range of uses by various marginalized groups in diverse contexts globally.

Organized by B Camminga, Tunay Altay, Özgün Eylül İşcen, and Ruth Ramsden-Karelse

Please send 300-word abstracts for 15-minute papers and a short biographical note (100-150 words) to b.camminga@ici-berlin.org
