Undirected Dimensions

Annual Conference, 9-10 Nov 2023

The annual conference of the collaborative research centre Intervening Arts (SFB 1512) ‘Dynamics of the Intransitive: Undirected Interventions’, is dedicated to artistic procedures and practices that do not pursue an explicit political or critical agenda but that nevertheless, or precisely as a result, draw forth their specific potential for intervention. As guiding aspects of such interventions, improvisation, obstinacy, and objectlessness will be explored.

The Double Bind of Reproduction: On Black Mediality

Lecture, 30 Nov 2023, 19:30

This talk approaches two concepts — the double bind of reproduction and black mediality, which get to the heart of a number of theoretical questions concerning the entanglements of raciality, mediation, and immediation, and the violence of touch. Beginning from the double bind of reproduction, the talk interrogates the singular ways in which black feminine labors are conscripted in the reproduction of both the antiblack world and its fugitive ulteriors.

At the venue: Registration will open on 14 November 2023

KV Scale

ICI Fellowships

The ICI Berlin announces twelve post-doctoral fellowships for the ICI Focus ‘Scale’ of the ICI Core Project ‘Reduction’

Scales are used to quantify properties such as length and temperature, or also popularity and affect, but as Alice discovers in Wonderland, a change of scale can also have dramatic qualitative consequences. It disrupts customary ways of perceiving, acting, and being — to the point of feeling as ‘queer’ to her as a caterpillar’s metamorphoses. Helped by the arguably inextricable intertwinement of different meanings and aspects of ‘scale’, Alice’s experiences continue to provide apt metaphors for the disorienting importance and effects of scale and scaling at the time of hyperglobalization and the so-called anthropocene.

Model Organisms: Materiality, History and Politics

Symposium, 21-22 March 2024

Model organisms are life forms used to test biological theories of various kinds in laboratory settings. Research with model organisms muddies the line between models as material objects and models as abstract entities.

The organizers welcome proposals for 20-minute talks that present case studies of particular model organisms as well as more general critical accounts of the practice of modeling with living organisms and its historical and political aspects.

Organized by Maria Dębińska, Julia Sánchez-Dorado, Ben Woodard

Deadline: Abstracts of 250 words should be sent to by 30 November 2023. Letters of acceptance will be sent out by 15 December 2023.

Cultural Inquiry, 28
Berlin: ICI Berlin Press, 2023

Open Access

Ulysses, Dante, and Other Stories presents a unique form of creative scholarship. It employs Dante’s late medieval take on Ulysses and his tragic pursuit of ‘virtue and knowledge’ as a prism that refracts an ancient myth of journey and return into a modern story of discovery and nostalgia. Working notes, fragments from Ulysses’ many stories, personal memories, illuminations, and rewritings combine to form a new chain of narratives about the desire to create, the art of travelling, and the will of self-reinvention.

War-torn Ecologies, An-Archic Fragments: Reflections from the Middle East

ed. by Umut Yıldırım

Cultural Inquiry, 27
Berlin: ICI Berlin Press, 2023

Open Access

This volume identifies a conceptual intersection between war, affect, and ecology from the Middle East. It creates a counter archive of texts by ethnographers and artists, and enables divergent worlds to share a conversation through the crevices of mass violence across species. Delving into vital encounters with mulberry trees, wild medicinal plants, jinns, and goats, as well as bleaker experiences with toxic war materials like landmines, this volume expands an ecological sensorium that works through displacement, memory, endurance, and praxis.
