Flatness. Aesthetics
and Epistemology

Sybille Krämer

Lecture, 3 May 2022, 19:30

It is generally assumed that a reference to surfaces marks a reduction and hence a loss for our thinking. But what would it mean to consider the opposite? What if cultural techniques of ‘flattening’ afford a potential without which scientific and artistic inquiry, architectural and technological practices, but also bureaucratic administrations would hardly be possible?

Haunted
by Homes

Symposium, 5-6 May 2022

While home is often theorized as a category of space, the question of home for migrants is a complicated one. It brings to the forefront complex relations beyond the reductive dichotomies of 'home' and 'away', place of origin and place of residence, which postcolonial and diaspora studies often focus on. With the upsurge in migration rates in the past years, it becomes crucial to reflect on how to define home or the process of homemaking in an attempt to explore the experience of 'home' for mobile individuals.

Organized by Amina ElHalawani

An ICI Event in cooperation with the Center for Gender and Diversity Research (ZGD) and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Global South Studies (ICGSS) at the University of Tübingen, and TRAVESSIA at Federal Fluminese University (UFF), Brazil

The film Era o Hotel Cambridge (The Cambridge Squatter, 2016, 99 min) is set at the center of Brazil’s biggest city, São Paulo. It tracks the occupation of the Cambridge hotel, a rundown, 15 storey building, by low-paid workers, refugees, and homeless people from the Congo, Haiti, Palestine, Syria, and Brazil. They share their lives and stories, while the threat of eviction looms large over their heads.

Die Geschichtlichkeit der
Gegenwartskunst

Wahrheit und Aktualität der Niederländischen Malerei

Discussion, 9 May 2022, 19:30

Self-Reflection and Reduction
in the Language of Lyric

William Franke

Lecture, 16 May 2022, 19:30

Lyric is the language of self-reflection – and is self-reflexive language – par excellence. The question will be: Is self-reflection necessarily a reduction to the self? or, How can self-reflection effect a dissolution of the self and a breaking open to the Other?
