Vaccination

with Sander L. Gilman

Online Lecture, 3 Feb 2022, 19:00

The appropriation by anti-vaxxers of pro-choice rhetoric and its transformation into claims about ‘bodily violence’ (‘My body, my choice’) heralded a shift in the debates about COVID-19 and vaccination.

(Self)perceptions Within the Medical Encounter

Symposium, 3-4 Feb 2022, 10:00

The two-day symposium seeks to address the ambiguities of and tensions among perceptions at the cusp of internal (subjective) and external (social, cultural, political) 'gazes'. What the individual experiences, at either end of the consultation room, is a complex interlacing of personal vicissitudes, global structures, and community practices: a prismatic network in which 'care' and 'violence' are reflected and refracted in a variety of oftentimes overlapping and divergent interpretative modes.

Organized by Clio Nicastro and Marta-Laura Cenedese

The symposium is co-funded by the ICI Berlin, the VolkswagenStiftung, the Centre Marc Bloch, and the Nordic Summer University.

The workshops are available in-person at ICI Berlin or via Zoom. Please register on the event page. Public Livestream available for the roundtable.

Energy and Chronopolitical Allegory

Lecture, 22 Feb 2022, 19:30

Around the mid-nineteenth century what had hitherto been described as a multiplicity of physical forces, was unified under the novel concept of energy. Working in tandem with, and under the aegis of, the transition to fossil fuel consumption, this reduction of multiple forces to one single unifying concept also entailed the suggestion that turning the compressed time of fossil deposits into the accelerated time of propulsion engines was not simply an economic but a moral imperative.

Symposium, 24-25 Feb 2022, 15:00

This symposium will explore the concept of reduction from a phenomenological perspective, as a movement towards the cornerstones of lived experience, as an attempt to grasp the primary encounter between self and world through the senses.

Organized by Alberica Bazzoni and Federica Buongiorno

Class Struggle in the Psychoanalytic Consulting Room

Lecture, 1 Mar 2022, 20:00

Focusing on examples by British psychoanalysts, including Marion Milner and Christopher Bollas, this talk will attempt to construct an alternative to existing analyses of the encounter between Marxism and psychoanalysis that focus on abstract theories by grounding itself instead in socially and economically contextualised accounts of clinical practice.

Part of the lecture series Psychoanalytische Kulturwissenschaft

The lecture series is a cooperation of the Berlin Institute for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis (BiPP), the Cultural Science Institute of the Humboldt University Berlin, the International Psychoanalytic University (IPU), and the ICI Berlin, organized by Wilhelm Brüggen (BIPP), Monika Englisch (BIPP) and Andreas Gehrlach (HU Berlin), funded by the Friedrich Stiftung Hannover

Reenactment Strategies in Contemporary Arts and Theory

ed. by Cristina Baldacci, Clio Nicastro, and Arianna Sforzini

Cultural Inquiry, 21

Berlin: ICI Berlin Press, 2022

Open Access

Over the last twenty years, reenactment has been appropriated by both contemporary artistic production and art-theoretical discourse, becoming a distinctive strategy to engage with history and memory. As a critical act of repetition, which is never neutral in reactualizing the past, it has established unconventional modes of historicization and narration.
