Writing Letters to Extraterrestrials
Symposium, 22-24 Sep 2021
To be extra-terrestrial, or extra-earth, might imply excess or spillover from the earthly, being expelled from Terra, or the desire to leave the Earth altogether. It might invoke fears or excitement of greeting an alien other to Earth, or perhaps instead reveal fantasies of being able to leave a damaged Earth behind and become oneself extra-terrestrial.
Organized by Alison Sperling An ICI Event organized in cooperation with TU Berlin ZIFG and IPODI Initiative, CoFutures/Science Fictionality at the University of Oslo, and the American Studies Center at the University of Warsaw.

Making Contact with Deeper Times
with Adriana Knouf
Workshop, 25 Sep 2021, 11:30-14:30
The current moment is one perhaps especially transitional, a time that is causing re-modulations of life so as to become attuned to temporalities that exist beyond the human. There exist many nonhuman entities in the world whose existences make manifest these deeper times.
Part of the symposium Writing Letters to Extraterrestrials.

Critical Inflections on (Neo)Extractivism in Latin America
Symposium, 27-28 Sep 2021
Extraction has been historically associated with the removal of underground materials, whereas extractivism is a broader notion connoting a primarily white, colonial mode of accumulation of the West. For most Latin American countries, their natural wealth became their curse, permeating both the material and the symbolic realms.
Organized by Delfina Cabrera, Ariadne Collins, and Marlon Miguel in collaboration with materia – DLCL Focal Group (Stanford University)
The number of participants at the ICI Berlin is limited. Please register on the event page. Public Livestream available.

The Spectacle of Dysmorphia in Moara Passoni’s film Ecstasy

Cinematic narratives of eating disorders run the risk of presenting their characters largely passive – a risk compounded by the fear of ‘contagion’ that haunt the images of bodies affected by these disorders.
