Residence Permit

Residence Permit

Regulations for residency in Germany vary depending on the country of origin. Most non-Germans must apply for a residence permit at the "Ausländerbehörde" (foreigners authority).  The permit is usually linked to the affiliation and must therefore be renewed if the affiliation changes.

In order to avoid long waiting times at the foreigners authority, we recommend making an appointment two to three months before arriving in Germany. This can be done by email from abroad. See http://www.berlin.de/labo/auslaender/dienststelle/auslterminvereinb.html, choosing the e-mail address for "Studierende und Gastwissenschaftler".

Please note that you must have found an accommodation and registered with the local registry office before going to the appointment and that you will lose the appointment if you arrive too late.

Citizens of the EU

Citizens of the EU do not require a residence permit, but must still register at their local "Bürgeramt" (administrative office for citizens) upon arrival in Germany. They may also apply for the so-called freedom of movement certificate there. More information on this and the necessary application may be obtained from:
