Overview
At least 3 months before arriving in Berlin:
- Check the validity of your passport
- Check your visa requirements (noting that it may not be possible to extend a tourist visa within Germany)
- Obtain a health insurance for Germany
- Make an appointment with the foreigners authority if you need a residence permit
Before arriving in Berlin:
- Look for an accommodation in Berlin. We recommend that you come to Berlin some time before your fellowship begins, so that you have time to find an accommodation and deal with the required formalities.
- We expect you to arrive at the ICI on the first day of the fellowship. Please let Kirstin (kirstin.mueller(at)ici-berlin.org) know when you are planning to arrive or if you wish to visit the ICI before the beginning of your fellowship.
After your arrival in Berlin:
- Register with the registry office at the “Bürgeramt” within one week
- If you need a residence permit, register with the foreigners authority
- Open a bank account
Later:
Please keep in mind that you must notify the registry office for citizens (Bürgeramt) within one week of moving and changing your address. Use the form “Anmeldung bei der Meldebehörde” (registration with the registry office) for such address changes. Before moving away from Berlin, you must also notify the registry office for citizens of your departure in person or writing. Use the form “Abmeldung bei der Meldebehörde” (deregistration with the registry office) for this purpose.
