Overview
At least 3 months before arriving in Berlin:
- Check the validity of your passport
- Check your visa requirements with the German Embassy in your home country (noting that it may not be possible to extend a tourist visa within Germany)
- Obtain a health insurance for Germany
- Make an appointment with the foreigners authority if you need a residence permit
Before arriving in Berlin:
- Look for an accommodation in Berlin. We recommend that you come to Berlin some time before your fellowship begins, so that you have time to find an accommodation and deal with the required formalities.
- We expect you to arrive at the ICI on the first day of the fellowship. Please let Frauke Both know when you are planning to arrive or if you wish to visit the ICI before the beginning of your fellowship.
After your arrival in Berlin:
- Register with the registry office at the “Bürgeramt” within two weeks
- If you need a residence permit, register with the foreigners authority
- Open a bank account
Later:
Please keep in mind that you must notify the registry office for citizens (Bürgeramt) also after moving within Berlin or moving away from Berlin.
