Veranstaltung

The visual foundations of law continue to be the subject of controversy. The conference takes up the debate and examines both the historical foundations and the current relevance of this question within the broad context of theories of the body and of action. In the history of the law there are multiple parallels between legal concepts and body images, thus the first part of the conference IMAGO: Embodiment and Evidence will discuss the relation between law and embodiment, as an explosive historical and current topic. Often visual culture is a threat to the normativity of law, supplanting that juridical action is fundamentally dependent on visual media. The section ACTIO: The Presentation of the Unimaginable will confront the impacts of visual media on law, politics and the public in the context of human rights. The last part of the conference IUSTITIA: Form and Normativity discusses the normative dimension of art and the media. What is the function of the image and how comparable are aesthetic and juridical discourses?

Die Tagung widmet sich der Verkörperung und Visualisierung von Rechtsnormen und juridischen Prinzipien. Rechtswissenschaft und Bildgeschichte werden auf ihre Bedeutung für rechtliche Handlungen hin geprüft. Dabei reicht das Spektrum der Thesen von der Gefährlichkeit der Bildkultur für die Normativität des Rechts bis zu Positionen, die die Abhängigkeit des Juridischen von visuellen Medien akzentuieren. Die erste Sektion IMAGO: Verkörperung und Evidenz behandelt die Relation von Recht und Verkörperung und mögliche Parallelen zwischen Rechtsbegriffen und Körperbildern. Die zweite Sektion ACTIO: Bild und Genozid. Die Präsentation des Unvorstellbaren setzt sich mit den Folgen medialer Darstellung von schweren Menschenrechtsverletzungen für Politik und Öffentlichkeit auseinander. Im letzten Teil IUSTITIA: Form und Normativität wird die normative Dimension von Kunst und Medien diskutiert: was ist die Funktion des Bildes und wie sind ästhetische und juristische Diskurse vergleichbar?
