Techniques of the Uncanny
Workshop, ICI Berlin, 6-8 April 2009
Techniques of the Uncanny is an interdisciplinary workshop organized by the ICI in collaboration with the Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School of Literary Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin. It aims to gather scholars and artists from different disciplines and backgrounds to engage in collective discussion on the Freudian concept of the 'uncanny', as a model for understanding the interrelation between possible and impossible, norm and deviation. Under this perspective, the tension between familiarity and non-familiarity individuated by Freud in the notion itself of 'uncanny' can be used as a framework to interpret phenomena belonging to such domains as literature, arts, aesthetics and politics.
The workshop will be complemented by the participation of keynote speakers as well as the projection of a movie by Siouxzi L. Mernagh.
Location: ICI Berlin, Christinenstraße 18/19, 10119 Berlin.
